Research and Development
Several companies in North Richland, such as XLSci-Tech, have emerged from Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory. The PNNL main campus is adjacent to the Port of Benton's Technology & Business Campus and can provide office and lab space for these budding entrepreneurs. PNNL is a very unique, world class laboratory that conducts research and development work for private sector and government organizations like the Department of Energy. Over 4,000 scientists and engineers at PNNL have some of the most sophisticated equipment in the world to complete their research projects. State of the art facilities, like the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL), are available to qualified companies with new ideas. They also provide entrepreneurial services and guidance for spin-off and start-up companies through their economic development (see http://www.pnl.gov/edo/). The Applied Process Engineering Laboratory (APEL) and the Tri-Cities Enterprise Center (TEC) are other organizations that are in place to help hi-tech firms establish businesses in this region. To the South is Washington State University-Tri-Cities branch campus that is in the process of building a new bio-sciences facility.
